“Dirty Politicking During Early Voting in Jefferson Parish”
Louisianians are certainly no strangers to dirty politics or dirty politicians. Today, during early voting in Jefferson Parish, a surprise was found in the parking lot of the Joseph S. Yenni government building in Elmwood.
A campaign flyer was conveniently left near the building’s front entrance urging citizens to vote for Derrick Shepherd for Jefferson Parish Council’s District 3 seat. The flyer sported two photos of Shepherd wearing a khaki uniform and posing with President Barack Obama. It is unclear if these photos were taken when Shepherd was incarcerated in federal prison after pleading guilty in 2008 to a charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering. The flyer also listed other Democrat candidates Governor John Bel Edwards, Gwen Collins-Greenup, Judge Will Crain, and Joe Bouie.
According to Louisiana state law R.S. 18-1462, it is unlawful to “hand out, place, or display campaign cards, pictures, or other campaign literature of any kind or any description whatsoever” at polling places.
Anyone caught violating this statute faces a maximum fine up to $500 and 6-months imprisonment, or both.
This discovery comes on the heels of a radio advertisement by Louisiana State Senator Karen Carter Peterson and paid for by the Louisiana Democratic Party, which uses fear tactics in trying to somehow link Republican gubernatorial candidate Eddie Rispone to former KKK wizard David Duke and a plot to shutdown Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Louisiana.
