“CVS Pharmacy in NOLA Sued by LGBT Military Veteran for Discrimination”

New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell branded NOLA the “City of Yes,” relating to, among other things, City Hall’s embrace of LGBT rights. Apparently, that message of inclusion has not reached the CVS Pharmacy located at 1600 Elysian Fields Avenue.

According to a lawsuit filed in Civil District Court on June 10, 2019, a transgender man, Amanda Peterson, was heckled and ridiculed in front of other customers by CVS staff and allegedly asked if he was “a boy or a girl.”

In a separate encounter, a male CVS employee denied Mr. Peterson service and ordered him to leave the store by physical intimidation and domination. Supposedly, some staff members at the CVS location mistakenly believed that Mr. Peterson was a female shoplifter that had been barred from returning after a previous incident at the store.

Mr. Peterson is described by his attorneys as being a veteran of the U.S. Military that suffers from PTSD.

The “petition for damages” seeks compensation in an unspecified amount of money for discrimination and negligent inflection of emotional distress from CVS employees.

Mr. Peterson is represented by attorneys Mr. Galen Hair & Mr. John Bicknell with the law firm Scott, Vicknair, Hair & Checki, LLC. in New Orleans.

The case has been allotted to Division J, Judge D. Nicole Sheppard.
