“Chelsea Manning to Testify at Federal Grand Jury in Virginia”
Anti-war & anti-secrecy activist, Chelsea Manning, has been subpoenaed to testify in front of a federal grand jury convened in Alexandria, Virginia. Though the proceedings are secret, informed sources acknowledge that the targets are WikiLeaks and its founder, Julian Assange, who remains holdup inside of the Ecuadorian embassy in London. On Tuesday, Manning’s attorney lost a motion to quash the subpoena.
Prior to becoming a transgender woman, Manning was an enlisted intelligence analyst in the U.S. Army stationed in Iraq. Manning blew the whistle on what he believed was war crimes committed by coalition forces during the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan and leaked tens of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks in 2010. In 2013, Manning was sentenced by a military court to serve 35-years confinement at U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on espionage charges. Former President Barack Obama later commuted Manning’s sentence to seven-years.
In November of 2018, federal prosecutors announced that they had already obtained a sealed indictment against Assange. So, why is a new grand jury convening and seeking Manning’s testimony in 2019?
Could this new probe in some way be connected to the red-hot Russia collusion investigation in which Assange & WikiLeaks published hacked DNC e-mails during the 2016 presidential election? But what connection could Manning possibly have to Russia and the presidential election?
Assange has strongly denied publicly any prior contacts with Manning or Russia. Under President Obama, the Department of Justice decided not to indict Assange, however, the Trump administration changed course.
Sources contend that prosecutors are now seeking Manning's testimony in matters that predate 2016 involving Assange & WikiLeaks and unrelated to Russian election meddling.
