“The Catholic Church Canonizes 7 New Saints in Vatican City”
Today, Pope Francis led the Catholic Church in canonizing seven new saints following the Holy Mass in Saint Peter’s Square at the Vatican in Rome, Italy. The mass was attended by the presidents of Chile and Panama along with the queen of Spain.
The newly canonized seven saints include both men and women, most being priests and nuns who had dedicated their earthly lives to the church and the service of others. One of the seven was a layperson, a 19-year-old man from Italy who was orphaned as a child and died from tuberculous of the bones in 1836. Of the seven, the most distinct was Oscar Romero, a former Archbishop of San Salvador and martyr who was shot and killed in 1980 while conducting Mass on the alter.
Once a saint is canonized, churches may then be built in their honor and parishioners may pray to them for assistance as patrons.
This canonization ceremony takes place one day after news that Pope Francis defrocked two bishops in Chile over child sex abuse allegations.
