“Trump Rejects the International Criminal Court at U.N. Speech”

On Tuesday, September 25, 2018, President Trump addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations to opening laughter and snickering. Some diplomats found it humorous that Trump began his remarks by bragging what his administration has managed to accomplish in its first two-years. In turn, Trump began chuckling himself and said, “Didn’t expect that reaction but that’s okay.”

Throughout Trump’s roughly 35-minute speech, he rejected globalism, embraced patriotism, and even encouraged other nations to do the same. Trump said that each country represented at the U.N. has a “distinct culture, a rich history, and a people bound together by memory, tradition, and values that make our homelands like nowhere else on Earth.” Trump followed by saying that “America will always choose independence and cooperation over global governance, control, and domination.”

Trump went on to denounce the International Criminal Court (ICC) and called the court pejoratives like “unelected” and “unaccountable” a “global bureaucracy.” Trump contends that “the ICC has no jurisdiction, no legitimacy, and no authority,” despite claiming “near universal jurisdiction over the citizens of every country, violating all principles of justice, fairness, and due process.”

Trump’s condemnation of the ICC came one day before six nations in the Western Hemisphere asked that the U.N.-backed court investigate possible crimes against humanity carried out in Venezuela under President Nicolas Maduro’s government.

Based in The Netherlands, the ICC is an international tribunal supported by the U.N. The primary function of the ICC is to prosecute cases of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes of aggression, especially when national courts are unable or unwilling to act. Since its establishment in 2002, the ICC has adjudicated a relatively small number of complex cases, mainly involving African nations.
