“Part 2: Is Catholic Charities of New Orleans Fueling Illegal Immigration Into the City?”
Some say, “If you build it, they will come.” That saying could very well explain how Catholic Charities may be encouraging illegal immigration into New Orleans with its social justice programs.
This article is the latest in an exclusive series by “The NOLA Tabloid” in examining Catholic Charites of New Orleans regarding its assistance of undocumented migrants & refugees. These local revelations are surfacing shortly after the release of a redacted Pennsylvania grand jury report that implicated 300 priests in the sexual abuse of 1,000 children over a 70-year period, in yet another scandal plaguing the Catholic Church.
According to Catholic Charities’ website, www.ccano.org, its financial information is listed and publicly available for the years 2015 – 2016. The financial statements & independent auditors’ report were prepared by the local accounting firm, Postlethwaite & Netterville. Based on these financials, Catholic Charities of New Orleans reported over $30 million in assets, which include $12+ million in property & equipment and $9+ million in other investments. So, why would a non-profit organization like Catholic Charites have tens of millions of dollars in assets, properties, investments & even cash?
The Orleans Parish Tax Assessor’s website lists two properties owned by Catholic Charites in the 1400 block of Dante Street in New Orleans. One property is a multi-unit apartment building and the other is a duplex. In Jefferson Parish, it’s a similar story. The Jefferson Parish Tax Assessor’s website lists two additional apartment buildings in Metairie owned by Catholic Charites, one in the 3000 block of Houma Blvd. and the other in the 3000 block of Independence Street. Due to its non-profit status, Catholic Charities is exempt from paying property taxes on all four properties.
Are these tax-exempt apartment buildings being used by Catholic Charities to house undocumented migrants & refugees that arrive in New Orleans?
